A new mini-series on the design mistakes that quietly undermine quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies
Why this series?
Many research projects do not fail because researchers are careless, unintelligent, or unfamiliar with statistical software. They fail much earlier and much more quietly: at the level of research design. A weak research question, an ill-matched hypothesis, poorly operationalized concepts, thin qualitative evidence, or a method chosen for convenience can push a study off course long before the first table, theme, or model appears. Research-methods literature (Booth et al., 2024; Fetters et al., 2013; Ratan et al., 2019) consistently treats the research question as a backbone of the study, operationalization as the bridge from concepts to evidence, alignment as essential to design quality, and integration as central to real mixed methods work.
That is why this mini-series begins with mistakes rather than with tools. Students and researchers often learn methods as separate boxes: survey research, interviewing, experiments, thematic analysis, mixed methods, and so on. But real projects are not built in boxes. They are built through linked decisions. A flawed question distorts the hypothesis. A weak hypothesis produces vague variables. Poorly defined variables generate weak data. Data that do not match the purpose then invite the wrong method, and the wrong method often ends in exaggerated conclusions. Thinking in terms of design mistakes helps readers see the research process as a chain, not a menu.
The organizing idea of this series is simple: every mistake can be examined through four linked elements, RQ, RH, D, and M. RQ stands for the research question, RH for the research hypothesis, D for data, and M for methodology. Some studies rely more heavily on hypotheses, others do not. Some are qualitative, some quantitative, and some mixed. But across designs, these four elements still provide a useful diagnostic map. When a study goes wrong, the key question is not merely “Which method was used?” but “Where did the design start losing coherence?”.
Why learning from mistakes matters
There is a practical benefit to learning from design mistakes. Good design saves time, protects interpretive credibility, and reduces the temptation to oversell weak findings. It also helps researchers decide what can still be repaired after data collection and what cannot. In some cases, the study can be salvaged by narrowing the research question, reframing the claim, or choosing a method that better fits the data already collected. In other cases, the honest remedy is to admit that the original design cannot support the intended conclusion. That distinction matters greatly in responsible research practice. Discussions of causal claims, qualitative rigor, and mixed methods integration all point in the same direction: design quality determines not only what a study finds, but what it is legitimately allowed to say.
This mini-series will therefore do more than criticize bad design. Each future post will show, first, where a particular mistake enters the research process; second, how it distorts results and conclusions; third, how to avoid it before collecting data; and fourth, whether any partial repair is possible after the fact. The goal is not methodological perfectionism. The goal is disciplined, transparent, and realistic empirical inquiry.
A preview of the mistakes
The series will be organized by the logic of the research process rather than by rigidly separating quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research into isolated tracks. Still, each mistake will be linked to the design context in which it most commonly appears.

What future posts will look like
Each future post will take one mistake or, when pedagogically better, one cluster of closely related mistakes, and unpack it in a consistent but flexible way. The post will begin with an intuitive introduction to the mistake, then identify where it breaks the RQ–RH–D–M chain, show how it affects findings and conclusions, and finally distinguish between prevention and repair. Brief examples from two or three fields will be used not as long case studies, but as teaching devices. The end of each post will point readers to a small set of high-value readings rather than a bloated literature dump.
The advantage of following the whole series is cumulative. By the end, readers should be better able to diagnose whether a study has failed at the level of question, hypothesis, data, method, or conclusion, and just as importantly, to recognize these risks in their own projects before they become expensive mistakes. Good empirical research is not only about using the right technique. It is about preserving coherence from the first question to the final claim.
